Trimming the wick to that quarter inch made a huge difference — no soot at all, even on the third burn. The melt pool reached the edges evenly and the throw fills my whole living room without being overpowering.

The first burn took the full two hours to melt to the edges, and now every light-up is perfectly even with no tunneling. I also trimmed the wick to a quarter inch like the instructions said, and it burns clean without any black smoke.
